Government Sector Accountant (CAS)

As we expand our work with government and public-sector clients, we are seeking a Government Sector Accountant to support complex accounting, compliance, and reporting needs for agencies and organizations at the local, state, and federal level.

This role blends technical accounting expertise with a strong understanding of government regulations, compliance standards, and reporting frameworks. As a Government Sector Accountant, you will play a critical role in ensuring our clients meet regulatory requirements, optimize funding usage, and implement strong internal controls. Key Responsibilities

• Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements in accordance with GASB (Governmental Accounting Standards Board) and other applicable frameworks
• Manage compliance with federal, state, and local financial reporting and regulatory requirements
• Perform fund accounting and ensure accurate tracking of restricted and unrestricted funds
• Oversee grant accounting, reporting, and compliance (including Uniform Guidance and OMB Circulars)
• Support audits and prepare required documentation for internal and external auditors
• Implement and maintain strong internal controls tailored to government and nonprofit entities
• Provide insights on budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis for government-funded programs
• Collaborate with clients to strengthen financial processes, transparency, and efficiency
• Stay current with changes in government accounting standards and regulations
• Partner with advisory and CFO services teams at R2 Advisors to deliver holistic financial solutions to government clients

Skills and Attributes for Success

• Strong knowledge of government and fund accounting principles
• Experience with GASB, GAAP, and OMB Uniform Guidance
• Ability to analyze complex data and translate into clear insights for decision-makers
• High attention to detail and commitment to compliance and transparency
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage with both finance and non-finance stakeholders
• Proficiency in government financial systems and accounting software (experience with Sage, Unanet, or other ERP systems a plus)
